Over sixty years ago, Shri S. A. Kharche began his architectural journey at Sir J.J. School of Architecture, Mumbai, before graduating with honors from the AA School in London. He later worked for six years at Architects Co-Partnership (ACP), a leading British modernist architectural firm, where he developed a strong foundation in modern design principles.
In 1964, he joined Kothari & Associates in New Delhi, where he led and contributed to several major projects, including Oberoi’s first international five-star hotel, AIIMS, and the LIC Building.
In 1965, Shri S. A. Kharche established the Madras regional office of M/s. Master Sathe & Kothari, one of India’s leading architectural firms of the time. This marked the beginning of a significant architectural presence in South India. With a design approach rooted in clarity, functionality, and contextual sensitivity, the office undertook a wide range of institutional, industrial, commercial, and residential projects.
By 1979, the regional office evolved into an independent practice, Kharche & Associates. Built on values of integrity, collaboration, and sustainability, the firm was structured around architecture, engineering, and administration, enabling a seamless integration of design and execution. The practice continues to focus on thoughtful, user-centric, and environmentally responsible architecture.
In circa 1990, Shri S. A. Kharche was honored with the prestigious “Excellence in Architecture” award by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Bhishma Narain Singh, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of architecture.
